SharePoint 2013 - Planet of the Apps v2

HOOORAY!!! Planet of the Apps v2 is finally online.
A quick note about Amazon –  even though v2 is twice in size compared to v1, I have kept the same price on the book as v1. I am hoping this means anyone who has purchased the book already will get a free update :). Anyhow, I don’t control how amazon works, but lets hope that is the case.

My other SP2013 book –

Here are some basic changes between v1 and v2.

a) Full source code – Many of you emailed me asking for source code. Well, it didn’t make sense sharing beta code, it was going to change. At the end of this book, you can find the RTM version of the code used in this book.

b) Full book – I’ll keep this one short, I got buried under paid work and could not dedicate enough time to write end to end treatise on SharePoint. It will happen one day, but until then I will instead publish full book-lets, not incomplete stories of yet unpublished stuff.

c) Better Kindle Formatting – Better, not perfect. The thing is, as awesome as Kindle is, it is notoriously difficult when it comes to formatting things such as source code. Written text should be fine. But the convenience and updateability of digital books is hard to beat. So I have included all the source code, the combination of text in a digital updateable format and source code I feel will give you the best of both worlds.

d) A Pothole watch alert feature – this is not a SharePoint feature. This is what I have found as things you need to be aware of in Apps. The thing is, a lot of folks out there are talking about Apps and relegating solutions to the heap of history. Microsoft isn’t helping here either; they just said “Sandbox solutions are deprecated” which is the same company that told you “write a sandbox solution when you can”. And then I hear word-smithing around the meaning of “deprecated”. Here is how I understand “deprecated” – don’t use it, we will remove it in next version. I don’t think Apps are there yet, you can’t do everything in apps or some things are done better in solutions, mostly farm solutions but sometimes even sandbox solutions. This leaves me confused, and I share some of my feelings on what I am doing as architectural choices in my projects to keep me future proof and safe going forward.

e) Open Hole watch feature, a list of things that I feel we will see solutions for in the current V2013 release, but guidance for this is not out yet.

f) Continuous integration, uhh I mean improvement. There will be a planet of the Apps v3.0 after this. Knowledge is not stagnant. I welcome your inputs and interaction, I learn as much from you – well who am I kidding. I learn more from you than you learn from me. Here is how you can reach out to me,

I hope you find this book useful :)

Sound off but keep it civil:

Hi Sahil - any news on a UK release of version 2, or will the Amazon US version work with UK Kindles?

Thanks Sahil. Don't recall seeing the 2 adorning the cover before. The publication date of October 2011 threw me off guard as well. Looks like it's the right version after all.

Hi Sahil. I'd purchased the 1st version via the Kindle. I was ok with paying $4.99 for v2, but it won't let me do that. The Amazon site says I already own the title, and so can't buy this one. Removing the book from the Kindle seems to still keep a pointer to V1, so when I download the title again, it pulls down v1. I'll contact Amazon to see what I can do. I do want to get the new version, and I am happy to pay for it ...weird!

Cheers, Joe
