Swap Left Option and Command on RDP

This will save you some hair on your head. When you RDP to a Windows Machine from a mac, your alt and command keys are upside down. I have already extolled the virtues of KeyRemap4MacBook in my switch from PC to Mac post.

You can use that same app to swap the LEFT OPTION and LEFT COMMAND keys on your mac keyboard for RDP only. Here is how.

  1. Go to settings for KeyRemap4MacBook, and go to the Misc and Uninstall section
  2. Open private.xml
  3. Add the following to the private.xml, reload xml and check the “Swap command and option in Remote desktop” (new option at top).
   1:  <?xml version="1.0"?>
   2:  <root>
   3:  <item>
   4: <name>Swap command and option in Remote Desktop</name>
   5:      <identifier>pcom.microsoft.rdc</identifier>
   6:      <only>REMOTEDESKTOPCONNECTION</only>
   7:      <block>
   8:      <autogen>--KeyToKey-- KeyCode::COMMAND_L, KeyCode::OPTION_L</autogen>
   9:      <autogen>--KeyToKey-- KeyCode::OPTION_L, KeyCode::COMMAND_L</autogen>
  10:      </block>
  11:  </item>
  12:  </root>

Enjoy!

Sound off but keep it civil:
