SharePoint 2013 Development Machine - Now Available

With SharePoint 2013 RTM’ing, I am thrilled to announce an updated version of my SharePoint 2013 Development Machine book’let. As you know, I am publishing many small booklets, and eventually I will publishing a single big book also – sort of the track/cd model. Also, this self-e-publish model allows me to keep the content updated as I learn more.

There is a very minor portion at the end that is still pre-RTM. Specifically as of now SharePoint Designer 2013 and Visual Studio tools for SharePoint 2013 have not yet RTM’ed. However, installing those is not very different from Beta2. The screenshots may change a bit. I will of course update the book soon as the RTM bits are available.

However, what is published right now, will show you how to build a SharePoint 2013 development VM on a single machine. This includes the setup for Apps, and the setup for Workflows. Office Web Apps has to be on another server, which I do show in the book, but as I make the case in the book – there is not much of a “dev” story to it that requires you to run that VM all the time. That second VM can be a shared VM, so 99.99% of the time, you can get by with a single machine development environment.

Every SharePoint developer will need to build a Virtual Machine on which they can do their development. The only exception to this rule is if you are targeting Office365 only, but still, having your own Virtual Machine running SharePoint 2013 is almost essential. This booklet is a larger part of many books and it walks you through the process of setting up a SINGLE MACHINE SharePoint 2013 development environment. Also, this book will walk you through the many practical implications you need to consider when creating such a machine.

Kindle Version available now. Version available now.

Please don’t forget to leave reviews, positive or negative – My aim in self-publishing is to also create a more honest and open communication channel.

If something is wrong with the book, I will keep updating it, and you will keep getting the updated version for free (I hope, I’m a Kindle Virgin).

Speaking of which, my previous book – SharePoint 2013 Planet of the Apps, I have updated the Kindle version to have MUCH MUCH better formatting now. Please let me know if it’s decent now or not.

My next update to Planet of the Apps will be post RTM. Enjoy! and Thanks! :)

Sound off but keep it civil:

Sahil, Best wishes with "SharePoint 2013 Development Machine", I saw that a reviewer upgraded your review of "Planet of the Apps" on Kindle, thanks to your interaction with the customer. This is a good example of you creating an honest and open communication channel.

Thomas, thanks. One of the dirty secrets of the book publishing world, authors ask their friends to leave good reviews or do hit jobs on other authors. It sucks, but it is a fact. All you have to do is google the name of the author and the reviewers and the picture becomes quite clear. I'm trying to create an open channel for a change. And negative reviews are quite welcome because, I will simply update the book and people should get the update for free. This is the number one reason I moved away from traditional publishing - I'm learning just like everyone else. But once you publish, things are set in stone and the publishers contribute zero value to the actual content or experience.

I can believe it, when people see those golden stars that denote a positive review they are much more likely to purchase. A shame these scores are sometimes manipulated by negative or sychophantic reviews.

Your book was very helpful. Thanks.

Found one minor issue. On p.37 (pdf) there is a wrong instruction and screenshot for step 5. This should be "Manage App Catalog" and not "Configure App URLs".

Btw. I did use the latest version of AutoSPInstaller instead of the farm configuration wizard. Works great and also does the app url configuration stuff.

Sahil, you mentioned picking Kerberos in p23 and said see the section "Enabling Kerberos" to do the setSPN commands. But there is no section "Enabling Kerberos" :)

My challenge is I am not sure how to decide whether it's pre-RTM or RTM. I did purchased your book but never used it during pre-RTM era. I do see some credits given to MS regarding workflow manager installer issues on RTM bits and it means it is targeted to RTM. Can you validate? It would be nice if you can change the titles of your book for which version it applies to.. Just my two cents..

Mike - this book is RTM ready as of now. Not enough changes to warrant a full update at the moment.

michiel, unfortunately lulu was too difficult to work with. But you can download a free kindle windows app and read it on your PC. Is that no good?
