Frankly, I don't see why this isn't a good thing?

This is a not a good thing ... because it means you can't use the software on a _secure_ virtual machine that doesn't have an Internet connection!
Then Sharepoint designer crashed every time I clicked cancel, eating up my '50' goes without remorse!

When I was that on my Virtual machine, I simply changed the network card, connected to the internet, activated, re-changed the network to internal network, and continued working.
So yes it is somewhat of a pain, but not insurmountable.
